Orris Root Peeled Powder (Iris germanica) 1 lb: C Orris Root Peeled Powder (Iris germanica) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Also called Iris Florentina. Due to its high concentration of Vitamin C, Orris Root tea is an excellent and pleasant tasting remedy in treating the common cold. Orris Root tea is a strong expectorant when treating coughs as well. Powdered root adds a refreshing scent to linen, dried root can be chewed to freshen breath and is a popular potpourri fixative. The fragrance is delicate and unique. Also used as a base for dry shampoos, toothpowders and face masks as well as perfumery. Orris Root used to be a popular flavor in candies in Victorian times. It is still widely used in cosmetics. The powdered root is excellent for brushing your teeth. It is an important ingredient in perfumery. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Orris Root is rarely employed in medicine at the present time.' 'The fresh root possesses diuretic, emetic and cathartic properties. If given in large doses, it will occasion nausea, vomiting, purging and colic.' 'The drug was formerly employed in the treatment of bronchitis and chronic diarrhoea, and was considered a useful remedy in dropsy. The internal dose is stated to be from 5 to 15 grains.' 'The starch of the rhizome was formerly reckoned medicinal.' 'The dried powder is said to act as a good snuff, useful to excite sneezing to relieve cases of congested headache.' 'Pieces of the dried root are occasionally chewed for the purpose of overcoming a disagreeable breath.' 'The principal use of the dried root is, however, in perfumery, in sachet powders and to flavour dentifrices, toothpowders and cachous.' 'Oil of Orris, obtained by distilling powdered Orris root with steam, has an intense and extremely delicate odour of the fresh Violet and commands a high price. It is used commercially in the preparation of the finest scents and is also blended with artificial Violet perfumes, the odour of which it renders more subtle. Orris has the power of strengthening the odour of other fragrant bodies and is used as a fixative in perfumery.' 'Powdered Orris root is sometimes put into rinsing water in laundries and imparts a refreshing and fragrant scent to the linen'. 'Orris root, mixed with Anise, was used in England as a perfume for linen as early as 1480, under which date it is mentioned in the Wardrobe accounts of Edward IV.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Active irritant qualities are ascribed to orris-root, abdominal pain and emeto-catharsis being among its effects. These properties are dissipated upon drying the rhizome, when it becomes merely a gastric stimulant. The salivary flow and renal secretion are augmented by it while sneezing and increased pituitary secretion results from its use as a sternutatory.' 'About the only use now made of orris-root is as an ingredient of breath perfumes and dentifrices, it not only giving a pleasant flavor, but acting beneficially on the gums. It was formerly used as a diuretic, expectorant, and remedy for c

Vanilla Bean Whole Bourbon Cert. Organic (Vanilla planifolia) ¼ lb: K Vanilla Bean Whole Bourbon Cert. Organic (Vanilla planifolia) ¼ lb: K

This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Whole vanilla beans, rather than extract, will impart the purest, most intense vanilla flavor to your recipes. The best-quality, Vanilla planifolia, comes from Mexico, Madagascar, and Indonesia. Vanilla planifolia is native to Central America, where it is still grown commercially. The closely related Vanilla tahitensis, Tahiti vanilla, is native to Oceania. The Aztecs called Vanilla 'tlilxochitl,' 'black flower.' It flavored their 'cacao water,' 'cacahuatl' in the Aztec tongue Náhuatl, 'chocol haa' in the Mayan tongue. (The Aztecs were to the Mayans as the Dorians to the Mycenaeans, if one may make so bold.) Cacahuatl was made from vanilla, cocoa beans, honey, hot water and other spices, such as annatto. The Aztecs considered vanilla to be an aphrodisiac. Vanilla flavors many chocolate and confectionery items and several liqueurs such as Crème de Cacao and Galliano. V. pompona, also called Guadeloupe vanilla or Antilles vanilla from the West Indies, and V. tahitiensis, from Tahiti, are sometimes used as V. planifolia replacements. They are 'inferior' only in the sense that they are different. The aroma and flavor are slightly different, but taste is personal, and the alternative species are preferred by some. Fresh vanilla pods are tasteless - the vanillin is bound as a glycoside and must be set free by enzymatic reaction, normally induced by a sequence of blanching or steaming operations. It is this, and the equally labor-intensive need for manual pollination outside its originary South American home, that makes vanilla so expensive. Store vanilla beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark space along with your other spices. The deepest vanilla flavor is found in the seeds, the dark, sticky pulp inside the bean. Once you've extracted the seeds, there are a few ways to use them and the scraped pod: Infuse a liquid with the bean and seeds. Drop the seeds and the scraped pod into warm liquid, such as scalded milk or cream, and leave them to infuse for at least 30 minutes and up to an hour. Strain the pod from the liquid (the tiny specks of vanilla seeds will remain). Use the flavored liquid for your recipe. Add the scraped seeds directly to a batter. For example, add the seeds to the butter and sugar before creaming when making cookies. Add a small piece of a split bean (no need to scrape first) to a savory stew at the beginning of cooking. This is especially good in rich shellfish dishes or highly spiced meat dishes. A 2-inch piece of vanilla bean (halved and scraped) equals about 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Rosemary Leaf Whole (Rosmarinus officinalis) 1 lb: C Rosemary Leaf Whole (Rosmarinus officinalis) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Sweet-smelling Rosemary is a traditional meat preservative. As Rosemary doesn't lose its flavor by long cooking, it is popular in meat dishes, soups, stews, souffles and breads. Rosemary is used in the French herbes de Provençe and bouquet garni, and to flavor vinegar. It is, however, quite strong, and must not be overused. Rosemarys traditional role in herbal medicine is confirmed by modern research. Eucalyptol (cineole) is a potent antibacterial that relaxes the lung's smooth muscles. Carnosol inhibits cancer formation. Rosmarinic acid is only one of Rosemary's many proven antioxidants. This, of course, explains its traditional role in meat and food preservation. 'Antioxidant' also helps to explain Rosemary's traditional use for headache and depression. Rosemary's memory enhancing properties have long been appreciated. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine, an important element of memory, seems to be protected from breakdown by Rosemary. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Rosemary leaf for 'Internal: Dyspeptic complaints. External: Supportive therapy for rheumatic diseases, circulatory problems.' 'Daily dosage: 4 - 6 g of herb; 10 - 20 drops of essential oil;* equivalent preparations. External: 50 g of herb for one full bath; 6 - 10 percent essential oil in semi-solid and liquid preparations; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Cut drug for infusions, powder, dry extracts and other galenical preparations for internal and external use. 'Actions: Experimental: Antispasmodic on gall passages and small intestines; Positive inotropic; Increases flow through the coronary artery. In humans: Skin irritating; Stimulates increased blood supply (external use).' *One must be careful in using essential oils they are so concentrated that they are easy to overuse to unsafe levels. Animal tests have demonstrated Rosemarys ability to control spasms in the gallbladder and upper intestine, improve the flow of blood to the heart, and strengthen the action of the heart muscle. This has a toning and calming effect on the digestion, especially where psychological tension is present. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, astringent, diaphoretic, stimulant. Oil of Rosemary has the carminative properties of other volatile oils and is an excellent stomachic and nervine, curing many cases of headache.' 'It is employed principally, externally, as spiritus Rosmarini, in hair-lotions, for its odour and effect in stimulating the hair-bulbs to renewed activity and preventing premature baldness.' 'An infusion of the dried plant (both leaves and flowers) combined with borax and used when cold, makes one of the best hairwashes known. It forms an effectual remedy for the prevention of scurf and dandruff.' 'The oil is also used externally as a rubefacient and is added to liniments as a fr

Woodsy, fresh, with an incense-like aroma. Rosemary is known as the herb of remembrance. The plant produces an almost colorless essential oil with a strong, fresh, camphor aroma. It's used in many citrus colognes, forest and Oriental perfumes, and eau de cologne. Rinses for dark hair often contain rosemary, as do room deodorants, household sprays, disinfectants and soaps. Aromatherapy benefits: clarifying, invigorating. Essential, absolute and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. The plants used to produce these oils are grown on certified organic fields and are third-party certified by Quality Assurance International; no synthetic chemicals are used in growing or processing them. Lemon Balm Leaf Powder (Melissa officinalis) 1 lb: C Lemon Balm Leaf Powder (Melissa officinalis) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Lemon balm is used in herbal teas, both for its flavor and its mild sedative properties. It is also used as a strong decoction, extract, tincture and skin lotion. The lemon-scented leavs are a potpourri favorite. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs Lemon Balm Leaf for 'Nervous sleeping disorders. Functional gastrointestinal complaints.' 'Dosage: Unless otherwise prescribed: Several times daily, 1.5 - 4.5 g of herb per cup of tea, as needed. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb, herb powder, fluid - extracts or dry extracts for teas and other galenical preparations. Ground herb and its preparations for oral use. Note: Combinations with other sedative and/or carminative herbs may be beneficial.' 'Actions: Sedative; Carminative.' Upset stomach and blue mood? Lemon balm may be just the thing. The tea is also recommended for menstrual cramps. It can also relieve chronic bronchial catarrh, and some forms of asthma. It is a key ingredient in certain perfumes and cosmetics. The terpenes, part of the pleasant smelling essential oil from lemon balm, produce this herb's relaxing and gas-relieving effects. Lemon balm lotion has demonstrated antiviral activity, and is useful as a topical herpes treatment. Lab studies indicate that Lemon balm prevents an overactive thyroid from hypersecretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone, thus preventing hyperthyroidism. This is an area of continuing research. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Carminative, diaphoretic and febrifuge. It induces a mild perspiration and makes a pleasant and cooling tea for feverish patients in cases of catarrh and influenza. To make the tea, pour 1 pint of boiling water upon 1 oz. of herb, infuse 15 minutes, allow to cool, then strain and drink freely. If sugar and a little lemonpeel or juice be added it makes a refreshing summer drink.' 'Balm is a useful herb, either alone or in combination with others. It is excellent in colds attended with fever, as it promotes perspiration.' 'John Hussey, of Sydenham, who lived to the age of 116, breakfasted for fifty years on Balm tea sweetened with honey, and herb teas were the usual breakfasts of Llewelyn Prince of Glamorgan, who died in his 108th year. Carmelite water, of which Balm was the chief ingredient, was drunk daily by the Emperor Charles V.' 'Commercial oil of Balm is not a pure distillate, but is probably oil of Lemon distilled over Balm. The oil is used in perfumery.' 'Balm is frequently used as one of the ingredients of pot-pourri. Mrs. Bardswell, in The Herb Garden, mentions Balm as one of the bushy herbs that are invaluable for the permanence of their leaf-odours, which, 'though ready when sought, do not force themselves upon us, but have to be coaxed out by touching, bruising or pressing. Balm with its delicious lemon scent, is by common consent one of the most sweetly

Pennyroyal Herb C/S (Mentha pulegium) 1 lb: C Pennyroyal Herb C/S (Mentha pulegium) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. The intensely fragrant leaves are a good base for potpourri. The plant is very aromatic, and its fragrance, like that of roses, was credited with medicinal properties by the Roman scholar Pliny. A known ingredient of the entheogenic kykeon potion along with ergot which was drunk during the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece. Often considered psychoactive in its own right, this plant interestingly enough has a history of use as a migraine treatment in England. Pennyroyal has toxic effects on the liver, however, and is no longer recommended for internal use in any form. Great for potpourri.

Tansy Herb C/S (Tanacetum vulgare) 1 lb: C Tansy Herb C/S (Tanacetum vulgare) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Tansy, in very small doses, had a respected reputation among the old herbalists, which Grieve, King's and Felter repeat here. Tansy, however, is poisonous in large doses, sometimes even in moderate doses, so unless you have experience with this herb, you should not use it, or use it in very small, experimental doses. As Felter puts it, 'Tansy is a uterine stimulant and emmenagogue, and is a popular but unsafe remedy to restore arrested or delayed menstruation.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tansy is largely used for expelling worms in children, the infusion of 1 oz. to a pint of boiling water being taken in teacupful doses, night and morning, fasting. It is also valuable in hysteria and in kidney weaknesses, the same infusion being taken in wineglassful doses, repeated frequently.' 'It forms an excellent and safe emmenagogue, and is of good service in low forms of fever, in ague and hysterical and nervous affections. As a diaphoretic nervine it is also useful. In moderate doses, the plant and its essential oil are stomachic and cordial, being anti-flatulent and serving to allay spasms. In large doses, it becomes a violent irritant.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Tansy is tonic, emmenagogue, and diaphoretic. In small doses, the cold infusion will be found useful in convalescence from exhausting diseases, in dyspepsia, with troublesome flatulence, hysteria, jaundice, and worms.' 'A warm infusion is diaphoretic and emmenagogue, and has been found beneficial in intermittent fever, suppressed menstruation, tardy labor-pains, and as a preventive for the paroxysms of gout. The seeds are reputed the most efficient for worms.' 'The oil is likewise used as an anthelmintic, and as an abortive, but for the last purpose it is highly dangerous and generally ineffectual. Tansy is much employed in the form of fomentation to swellings and tumors, local inflammations, etc., and applied to the bowels in amenorrhoea, and painful dysmenorrhoea. The vinous infusion is said to be beneficial in strangury, and other urinary obstructions, and in debility of the kidneys.' 'By means of a spray or inhalation, a solution of a strong tincture (1 to 4 or 10) is valuable in diphtheria, acute inflammations of the throat, and in epidemic catarrh (Scudder). The dose of the powder is from 30 to 60 grains, every 3 or 4 hours; of the infusion, from 1 to 4 fluid ounces; of the tincture of fresh tansy (viii to alcohol, 76 per cent, Oj), 1 to 30 drops; of the oil, from 2 to 10 drops. A very pleasant compound tincture may be made by adding tansy, 2 ounces; swamp milkweed, 1 ounce; unicorn root and prickly ash berries, of each, ounce; to 2 pints of diluted alcohol. Let them macerate for 14 days, and filter. This is useful as a vermifuge and tonic, and may be given to a child 2 or 3 years old, in doses of a teaspoonful, 3 or 4 times a day, in sweetened water.' Eclectic Materia Medica, 1922 (Felter): 'External.

Artemisia Leaf (Artemisia argyi; Mugwort; Ai Ye) Whole: 500 gm (1.17 lb): V Artemisia Leaf (Artemisia argyi; Mugwort; Ai Ye) Whole: 500 gm (1.17 lb): V

This is Plum Flower brand's nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. Sulfur Free, Chlorine Free, Aluminum Phosphate Free. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. Herbs that are preservative free are more natural looking and are generally darker. The brightness of the herbs may be appealing, but it indicates the presence of harmful additives. Despite their appearance, unsulfured herbs are more fresh and safer than regular commercially available products. The use of sulfur, chlorine and aluminum phosphate was made unnecessary through the establishment of Plum Flower processing stations in China. Herb harvesters slice and process the herbs fresh, avoiding the need to rehydrate dried herbs later to process. This first step is crucial, as rehydration leads to decomposition and thus the need for preservatives. The herbs are then packed and the packages vacuum-packed, injected with nitrogen, and sealed. The nitrogen process combined with the lack of sulfur treatment inhibits the growth of anaerobic organisms, resulting in safer, higher quality herbs. After opening, store in a cool dry place. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Governments Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world. Varuna Fulfillment Center items are special ordered. These take an extra week to deliver.

Seasons of the Soul Herbal Flower Oils are a bouquet of flower essences, pure botanical essential oils, and herbal flower infusions from five outstanding healing plants, in a base of safflower and olive oils. The flowers are hand-gathered from our own Demeter-certified Biodynamic organic gardens, or from pristine wild areas, and then sun-potentized in small batches with love and careful attention. These herbal oils form a unique mandala of healing for body and soul. Just as the Earth expresses herself in seasons, so also are there differing needs within our families, home and work, and the many cycles of daily living. The Seasons of the Soul mandala takes us through Spring (breaking up of water into air); Summer (the lifting of air into fire); Autumn (the bringing of fire to earth); and Winter (the meeting of earth with water). The Seasons of the Soul herbal flower oils weave together a tapestry of gifts from Nature and from the human heart. They offer a rainbow garment of beauty and health that speaks to both body and soul. We hope that you will be touched by their shining colors. The abundant and expansive lunar qualities of Mugwort make it a plant which is highly favored for the feminine reproductive system. Mugwort Moon Magic is valued by midwives who use it to stimulate the uterus at the concluding stages of pregnancy and throughout the birthing process, as well as to facilitate lactation for the nursing mother. Mugwort oil is also very helpful for toning and regulating the reproductive system and enhancing female fertility. Please note: although Mugwort Moon Magic can be used to prepare for delivery, it should not be used during pregnancy itself. Mugwort oil holds many other qualities which are very salutary for a wide spectrum of general health needs. In acupuncture, moxa made of Mugwort is applied as a smoke to meridian areas which need to be brought into greater warmth and expansiveness. Mugwort oil can provide these same qualities without the invasive use of smoke. Mugwort Moon Magic should be particularly considered for parts of the body which are lacking in circulation and appear blue or feel cold. Mugwort Moon Magic also balances those who may have too many 'summer' forces and are thus quite psychically expanded and dreamy. Mugwort has the unique capability of uniting lunar forces with solar forces and thus facilitates the integration of thoughts with feelings, clarity of psychic impressions and dream recall. Regular application of Mugwort Moon Magic on the breast and the heart areas helps to balance and center the three lower 'embodiment' chakras, with the three higher 'spiritual' energy centers of the soul. Major Indications * Apply compresses of Mugwort Oil to areas of the body which are blue in color or cold to the touch, such as varicose veins where the flow of blood is restricted or stagnant. * Extremely beneficial as a general balm for female reproductive health, especially erratic moon cycles longer than 2

Thyme Leaf Powder (Thymus vulgaris) 1 lb: C Thyme Leaf Powder (Thymus vulgaris) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Thyme is basic to all European cuisines. It is used for everything from thyme honey, butter, jelly, vinegars, vegetables, soups to meat and poultry. Thyme gives subtle, pleasing flavor to almost any savory dish, and is particularly nice when cooked slowly. Thyme is one of the key ingredients in bouquet garni, Herbs de Provence and Fines Herbes. In Britain, thyme is the most popular culinary herb besides mint. In Central Europe, Thyme is most used for soups, fish, meat, poultry and eggs. Thyme, particularly lemon thyme, is a great addition to herbal vinegar. Thyme is often combined with marjoram for sausages and goes well with bay or boldo leaves. Cheese is sometimes flavoured with thyme. The Jordan condiment zahtar contains thyme. The Egyptian meat-spice mix Dukka contains hazelnut, sesame, cumin, coriander, black pepper and thyme. A Louisiana Blackened fish recipe includes thyme, salt, red pepper, white pepper, oregano, garlic and onion powder. The fish is dipped into molten butter, then coated with the spice mix and fried very quickly at high temperature in a heavy skillet, without any further oil. The idea is to brown the spices quickly, not burn them. Thyme is common in Central American cuisine. Jamaica Jerk, the delicious meat spice mix, often contains thyme. Bees adore the herb and make exquisite honey with it thyme was planted as ground cover in Mediterranean orchards to lure them into pollinating the fruit trees. In ancient Greece it was strewn in banquet halls as an aphrodisiac, and distilled into ladies' perfume. Thyme is also a significant medicinal herb. The Sumerians used thyme medicinally as far back as 3000 B.C., and it was among the herbs and spices used in ancient Egypt to keep mummies fresh for the afterlife. Thymol, its active ingredient, helps loosen phlegm, combats bronchial spasms, and discourages growth of bacteria. First noted by a German pharmacist in 1725, thymol eventually replaced carbolic acid as a safer, yet effective, antiseptic. Today it's found in such popular over-the-counter products as Listerine mouthwash and Vicks VapoRub. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Thyme for 'Symptoms of bronchitis and whooping cough. Catarrhs of the upper respiratory tracts.' 'Dosage: 1 - 2 g of herb for 1 cup of tea, several times a day as needed; 1 - 2 g fluidextract 1 - 3 times daily; 5 percent infusion for compresses. Mode of Administration: Cut herb, powder, liquid extract or dry extract for infusions and other galenical preparations. Liquid and solid medicinal forms for internal and external application.' 'Combinations with other herbs that have expectorant action could be appropriate. Actions: Bronchoantispasmodic; Expectorant; Antibacterial.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic and carminative.' 'The pounded herb, if given f

Bergamot, Orange Bergaptene-Free Essential Oil 1/3 oz: K Bergamot, Orange Bergaptene-Free Essential Oil 1/3 oz: K

Bergamot, Orange BF - From an uncommon citrus fruit. Bergamot oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the nearly ripe fruit. The aroma of bergamot oil is fresh, lively, fruity and sweet. It is an excellent deodorizer or room spray. It contains a constituent called bergaptene that increases the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. Bergamot BF means 'bergaptene free.' Most of the sensitizing bergaptene constituent has been distilled out of this product but traces may still remain. There is still potential for reaction in sensitive individuals, however. Common sense dictates that one avoid using bergamot and bergamot BF on the skin when there is a possibility of exposure to sunlight. Aromatherapy benefits: uplifting, inspiring, confidence-building. Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant. Essential oils and absolutes are very potent and should always be used sparingly and in conjunction with a reliable reference. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added.

Aloes Powder (Aloe ferox; Cape Aloe) 1 lb: C Aloes Powder (Aloe ferox; Cape Aloe) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. The powder is turned into a gel by adding water. Aloe ferox gel is exceptional among the gels of other aloe species because of its high calcium and total amino-acid content. In this regard it far surpasses Aloe vera and other species utilised for their gel. The 34 different amino-acids contained in Aloe ferox gel amount to more than 30nMol/mg of the dry mass of whole leaf. Aloe ferox is used precisley the same way as Aloe vera, and is covered by the old herbalists in the same article, under the heading 'Aloes.' As the Eclectic Materia Medica, 1922, puts it, 'The dried juice of the leaves of several species of Aloe: (1) Aloe Perryi, Baker; (2) Aloe vera, Linné; (3) Aloe ferox, Miller. (Nat. Ord. Liliaceae). Barbadoes, Africa and the Orient. Common Names: (1) Socotrine Aloes; (2) Curaçoa Aloes; (3) Cape Aloes.' As Grieve puts it, 'There is little to choose medicinally between the Curacoa and Socotrine varieties...' When applied externally, gel or preparations of gel made from the plant powder achieve anti-inflammatory effects through activity against bradykinin, prostaglandin and thromboxane, which are substances involved in causing inflammatory swelling, pain and constriction of small blood vessels. Laboratory experiments have shown that the gel stimulates the growth not only of lymphocytes, which are important blood cells in immunological defence mechanisms, but also of fibroblastic cells in skin and connective tissues, thus aiding in tissue regeneration after wounding. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Aloes for 'Constipation. Dosage: Aloe powder, aqueous and aqueous-alcoholic extracts in powdered or liquid form, for oral use. Unless otherwise prescribed: 20 - 30 mg hydroxyanthracene derivatives/day, calculated as anhydrous aloin. The individually correct dosage is the smallest dosage necessary to maintain a soft stool.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The drug Aloes is one of the safest and best warm and stimulating purgatives to persons of sedentary habits and phlegmatic constitutions. An ordinary small dose takes from 15 to 18 hours to produce an effect. Its action is exerted mainly on the large intestine, for which reason, also it is useful as a vermifuge. Its use, however, is said to induce Piles.' 'Preparations of Aloes are rarely prescribed alone, they require the addition of carminatives to moderate the tendency to griping. The compound preparations of Aloes in use generally contain such correctives, but powdered Aloes and the extracts of Aloes represent the crude drug.' 'Aloes in one form or another is the commonest domestic medicine and is the basis of most proprietary or so-called 'patent' pills.' 'There is little to choose medicinally between the Curacoa and Socotrine varieties, but the former is somewhat more powerful, 2 grains of Curacoa Aloes being equal to 3 gra

Comfrey Root Powder Cert. Organic (Symphytum officinale) 1 lb: K Comfrey Root Powder Cert. Organic (Symphytum officinale) 1 lb: K

This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion, decoction, tincture and poultice. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Comfrey herb for 'External: Bruises, sprains. Note: Application should only occur on intact skin. During pregnancy use only after consultation with a physician.' 'Dosage: Ointments and other preparations for external application with 5 - 20 percent dried drug; equivalent preparations. The daily applied dosage should not exceed 100 µg (mcg) of pyrrolizidine alkaloids with 1,2-unsaturated necine structure, including their N-oxides. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb and other galenical preparations for external use. Duration of Administration: Not more than 4 - 6 weeks per year. Action: Antiinflammatory.' Comfrey has an ancient reputation as a wound-healer. Comfrey abounds in the healing agents mucilage and allantoin. A water extract of comfrey has been shown to stimulate production of protective substances known as prostaglandins in the stomachs of experimental animals, thus confirming comfreys ancient reputation. These same constituents make it useful for bronchitis and diarrhea. Note that, unlike the old herbalists, the Commission E recommends external Comfrey use only. The FDA warns of the potential for liver damage: 'The pyrrolizidine alkaloids that are present in comfrey, in addition to being potent hepatotoxins, have also been shown to be toxic to other tissues as well. There is also evidence that implicates these substances as carcinogens. Taken together, the clear evidence of an association between oral exposure to pyrrolizidine alkaloids and serious adverse health effects and the lack of any valid scientific data that would enable the agency to determine whether there is an exposure, if any, that would present no harm to consumers, indicates that this substance should not be used as an ingredient in dietary supplements.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'As the plant abounds in mucilage, it is frequently given whenever a mucilaginous medicine is required and has been used like Marshmallow for intestinal troubles. It is very similar in its emollient action to Marshmallow, but in many cases is even preferred to it and is an ingredient in a large number of herbal preparations. It forms a gentle remedy in cases of diarrhoea and dysentery.' 'A decoction is made by boiling ½ to 1 oz. of crushed root in 1 quart of water or milk, which is taken in wineglassful doses, frequently. For its demulcent action it has long been employed domestically in lung troubles and also for quinsy and whooping-cough. The root is more effectual than the leaves and is the part usually used in cases of coughs. It is highly esteemed for all pulmonary complaints, consumption and bleeding of the lungs. A strong decoction, or tea, is recommended in cases of internal haemorr

Flax Seed Powder (Linum usitatissimum) 1 lb: C Flax Seed Powder (Linum usitatissimum) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Also called Linseed. Used as an infusion, decoction, gruel and poultice. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Flaxseed for 'Internal: Chronic constipation, for colons damaged by abuse of laxatives, irritable colon, diverticulitis, as mucilage for gastritis and enteritis. External: As cataplasm for local inflammation.' 'Contraindications: Ileus of any origin. Side Effects: If directions are observed, i.e., especially if the concomitant administration of sufficient amounts of liquid (1:10) is observed, there are no known side effects. Interactions with Other Drugs: As with any other mucilage, the absorption of other drugs may be negatively affected.' 'Dosage: Unless otherwise prescribed: Internal: 1 tablespoon of whole or 'bruised' seed (not ground) with 150 ml of liquid 2 - 3 times daily. 2 - 3 tablespoons of milled flaxseed for the preparation of flaxseed mucilage (gruel). External: 30 - 50 g flaxseed flour for a moist-heat cataplasm or compress. Mode of Administration: Internal: As seed, as cracked or coarsely ground seed, in which only the cuticle and mucilage epidermis are damaged; as flaxseed mucilage (gruel) and other galenical preparations. External: As flaxseed flour or flaxseed expellent.' 'Actions: Laxative effects due to increase in volume and consequent initiation of intestinal peristalsis due to stretching reflexes. Protective effect on the mucosa because of coating action.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Emollient, demulcent, pectoral. The crushed seeds or linseed meal make a very useful poultice, either alone or with mustard. In ulceration and superficial or deep-seated inflammation a linseed poultice allays irritation and pain and promotes suppuration. The addition of a little lobelia seed makes it of greater value in cases of boils. It is commonly used for abscesses and other local affections.' 'Linseed is largely employed as an addition to cough medicines. As a domestic remedy for colds, coughs and irritation of the urinary organs, linseed tea is most valuable. A little honey and lemon juice makes it very agreeable and more efficacious. This demulcent infusion contains a large quantity of mucilage, and is made from 1 oz. of the ground or entire seeds to 1 pint of boiling water. It is taken in wineglassful doses, which may be repeated ad libitum.' 'Linseed oil, mixed with an equal quantity of lime water, known then as Carron Oil, is an excellent application for burns and scalds.' 'Internally, the oil is sometimes given as a laxative; in cases of gravel and stone it is excellent, and has been administered in pleurisy with great success. It may also be used as an injection in constipation. Mixed with honey, linseed oil has been used as a cosmetic for removing spots from the face.' 'The oil enters into veterinary pharmacy as a purgative for sheep and horses, and a jell

Tea Tree Organic Essential Oil 1 2/3 oz: K Tea Tree Organic Essential Oil 1 2/3 oz: K

The leaf of the tea, or ti, tree had a long history of use by the indigenous peoples of Australia before tea tree was 'discovered' by the crew of the famous English explorer James Cook. The aroma of the oil is warm, spicy, medicinal and volatile. It is occasionally used to scent spicy colognes and aftershaves. It blends well with lavandin, rosemary and nutmeg oils. Aromatherapy benefits: cleansing, purifying, uplifting. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added. The Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) is a member of the Myrtaceae family and is an indigenous species to Northern New South Wales, Australia. The oil is found within the cells of the leaves, and as the Tea Tree is extremely fast-growing it is a constantly renewable resource. The crushed leaves were used as a general antiseptic by the Native Australians for thousands of years. Captain James Cook and his crew used the leaves as a substitute for tea, hence the name. Unlike the dilute tea, however, the concentrated oil should be used topically, not ingested. Tea Tree oil is an effective bactericide killing a broad spectrum of bacteria and a range of stubborn fungi. It is safe for healthy tissue and does not inhibit normal cell growth and rejuvenation. Tea Tree oil is a powerful organic solvent and will actually dissolve the lumps of white blood cells which make pus. The oil contains numerous chemicals known as terpenoids. The oil kills fungus and bacteria, including those resistant to some antibiotics. A single blind study has shown topical application of 5% tea tree oil in people with acne is as helpful as benzoylperoxide and has fewer side effects. Tea tree oil contributes to an extremely effective antibacterial shampoo. A double blind study found 100% tea tree oil applied topically was as effective as the antifungal medicine clotrimazole for people with athletes foot fungus affecting the toe nails. Dilute solutions, containing no more than 5% tea tree oil, can safely be used as a very effective mouthwash. Unlike many antiseptics, Tea Tree oil kills bacteria as effectively in the real environment of the body as it does in the test tube. Its solvent nature allows it to penetrate into skin layers, even reaching inaccessible sites such as the fingernails and toenails. Kalyx Fulfillment Center shi

Catnip Leaf C/S (Nepeta cataria) 1 lb: C Catnip Leaf C/S (Nepeta cataria) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture and smoke. Have you ever seen a cat on catnip? It's hilarious they go bonkers. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, vol. 207, pages 1349-1350, 1969) published a paper that described the psychoactive effects of catnip in people. People who smoked catnip were said to become happy and relaxed. Catnip has always been used by people, for whom it is a mild, safe sedative. Catnip tea was a regular beverage in England before the introduction of tea from China. It is a traditional cold remedy. It also is traditonally used for upset stomach and children's ailments, such diarrhea, hysteria and nightmare. The essential oil in catnip contains a monoterpene similar to the valepotriates found in valerian, an even more widely renowned sedative. Animal studies (except those involving cats, who seem to have a sexual thing for catnip) have found it to increase sleep. The monoterpenes also help with coughs. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Carminative, tonic, diaphoretic, refrigerant and slightly emmenagogue, specially antispasmodic, and mildly stimulating.' 'Producing free perspiration, it is very useful in colds. Catnep Tea is a valuable drink in every case of fever, because of its action in inducing sleep and producing perspiration without increasing the heat of the system.' 'It is good in restlessness, colic, insanity and nervousness, and is used as a mild nervine for children, one of its chief uses being, indeed, in the treatment of children's ailments.' 'The infusion of 1 oz. to a pint of boiling water may be taken by adults in doses of 2 tablespoonsful, by children in 2 or 3 teaspoonsful frequently, to relieve pain and flatulence. An injection of Catnep Tea is also used for colicky pains.' 'The herb should always be infused, boiling will spoil it. Its qualities are somewhat volatile, hence when made it should be covered up.' 'The tea may be drunk freely, but if taken in very large doses when warm, it frequently acts as an emetic.' 'It has proved efficacious in nervous headaches and as an emmenagogue, though for the latter purpose, it is preferable to use Catnep, not as a warm tea, but to express the juice of the green herb and take it in tablespoonful doses, three times a day.' 'An injection of the tea also relieves headache and hysteria, by its immediate action upon the sacral plexus. The young tops, made into a conserve, have been found serviceable for nightmare.' 'Catnep may be combined with other agents of a more decidedly diaphoretic nature. Equal parts of warm Catnep tea and Saffron are excellent in scarlet-fever and small-pox, as well as colds and hysterics. It will relieve painful swellings when applied in the form of a poultice or fomentation.' 'Old writers recommended a decoction of the herb, sweetened with honey for relieving a cough, and Culpepper tells us also that 'the juice d

This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion, decoction, tincture, poultice and bath. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Chamomile for 'External: Skin and mucous membrane inflammations, as well as bacterial skin diseases, including those of the oral cavity and gums. Inflammations and irritations of the respiratory tract (inhalations). Ano-genital inflammation (baths and irrigation). Internal: Gastrointestinal spasms and inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.' 'Dosage: Boiling water (ca. 150 ml) is poured over a heaping tablespoon of chamomile (ca. 3 g), covered, and after 5 - 10 minutes passed through a tea strainer. Unless otherwise prescribed, for gastrointestinal complaints a cup of the freshly prepared tea is drunk three or four times a day between meals. For inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, the freshly prepared tea is used as a wash or gargle.' 'External: For poultices and rinses, 3 - 10 percent infusions; As a bath additive, 50 g - 10 liters (approximately 2-½ gallons) water; Semi-solid formulations with preparations corresponding to 3 - 10 percent herb. Mode of Administration: Liquid and solid preparations for external and internal application.' 'Actions: Antiphlogistic; Musculotropic; Antispasmodic; Promotes wound healing; Deodorant; Antibacterial; Bacteriostatic; Stimulates skin metabolism.' Modern clinical studies have confirmed that German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) share many of the same constituents, and that chamomile does indeed live up to its traditional reputation. Chamomile contains numerous volatile oils and flavonoids which contribute to the herb's anti- antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and muscle relaxing action, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Taken as a tea or liquid extract, chamomile can alleviate intestinal pain from gas, heartburn, and ulcers. Double-blind studies of topical applications of chamomile have shown it to be moderately effective in the treatment of such skin problems as bed sores and eczema. Chamomile ointment can help reduce symptoms of psoriasis and help heal burns. Chamomile baths are a wonderful skin treatment. The inhaled steam from an infusion or decoction helps alleviate cold symptoms, and the tea or decoction itself can be used as a mouthwash or gargle to help reduce pain from gum disease or mouth sores. The traditional herbalists, of course, stress chamomiles main traditional function that of a safe and soothing nervine with positive gastrointestinal effects. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The flowers of the German Chamomile, though aromatic, have a very bitter taste. They contain a volatile oil, a bitter extractive and little tannic acid.' 'Medicinal Action and Uses: Carminative, sedative and tonic. T

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture, ointment and bath. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Yarrow for 'Internal: Loss of appetite, dyspeptic ailments, such as mild, spastic discomforts of the gastrointestinal tract. As sitz bath: Painful, cramp-like conditions of psychosomatic origin (in the lower part of the female pelvis).' 'Daily dosage: 4.5 g yarrow herb; 3 tsp. pressed juice from fresh plants; 3 g yarrow flowers; equivalent preparations. For sitz baths: 100 g yarrow per 20 l (5 gal.) of water. Mode of Administration: Comminuted drug for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use and for sitz baths, pressed juice of fresh plants for internal use. Actions: Choleretic; Antibacterial; Astringent; Antispasmodic.' Confirming the judgement of the German Commission E, the contemporary British Herbal Compendium lists Yarrow for internal use for feverish conditions, common cold, and digestive complaints; and its topical use for slow-healing wounds and skin inflammations. Yarrow tea is a traditional Native American diaphoretic (sweat) remedy for fevers and colds. Yarrow infusions and decoctions have also traditionally been used as a gastrointestinal aid. Yarrow also acts as a urinary antiseptic, and has traditionally been used for such infections as cystitis. Yarrow also lowers blood pressure by dilating the peripheral vessels, and so is very helpful for hypertension. Yarrow decoction and ointment can be applied topically to bruises, sprains, and swellings. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Diaphoretic, astringent, tonic, stimulant and mild aromatic.' 'Yarrow Tea is a good remedy for severe colds, being most useful in the commencement of fevers, and in cases of obstructed perspiration. The infusion is made with 1 oz. of dried herb to 1 pint of boiling water, drunk warm, in wineglassful doses. It may be sweetened with sugar, honey or treacle, adding a little Cayenne Pepper, and to each dose a teaspoonful of Composition Essence. It opens the pores freely and purifies the blood, and is recommended in the early stages of children's colds, and in measles and other eruptive diseases.; 'A decoction of the whole plant is employed for bleeding piles, and is good for kidney disorders. It has the reputation also of being a preventative of baldness, if the head be washed with it.' 'Preparations: Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm. An ointment made by the Highlanders of Scotland of the fresh herb is good for piles, and is also considered good against the scab in sheep.' 'An essential oil has been extracted from the flowers, but is not now used.' 'Linnaeus recommended the bruised herb, fresh, as an excellent vulnerary and styptic. It is employed in Norway for the cure of rheumatism, and the fresh leaves chewed are said to cure toothache.' 'In Sweden it is called 'Field Hop

Feverfew Herb Powder (Tanacetum parthenium) 1 lb: C Feverfew Herb Powder (Tanacetum parthenium) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. Feverfew is recommended in modern European herbal medicine, as in ancient Greek herbal medicine, as a preventative of migraine headaches. It an effective anti-inflammatory, vasodilator and emmenagogue. It contains a range of compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones, 85% of which are a compound called parthenolide. Parthenolide helps prevent excessive clumping of platelets and inhibits the release of certain chemicals, including serotonin and some inflammatory mediators. According to several double blind studies with migraine patients, feverfew reduces the severity, duration, and frequency of migraine headaches. The same studies also report beneficial side effects of regular use, such as relief from depression and arthritic pain due to inflammation. Painful and sluggish menstrual flow is also relieved by Feverfew. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'As a stimulant it is useful as an emmenagogue. Is also employed in hysterical complaints, nervousness and lowness of spirits, and is a general tonic. The cold infusion is made from 1 oz. of the herb to a pint of boiling water, allowed to cool, and taken frequently in doses of half a teacupful. A decoction with sugar or honey is said to be good for coughs, wheezing and difficult breathing.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Tonic, carminative, emmenagogue, vermifuge, and stimulant. This agent is one of the pleasantest of the tonics, influencing the whole intestinal tract, increasing the appetite, improving digestion, and promoting secretion, besides having a decided action upon the renal and cutaneous functions.' 'The warm infusion is an excellent remedy in recent colds, flatulency, worms, atonic dyspepsia, irregular menstruation, nervous debility, hysteria, suppression of the urine, and in some febrile diseases.' 'In hysteria or flatulency, 1 teaspoonful of the compound spirits of lavender forms a valuable addition to the dose of the infusion, which is from 2 to 4 fluid ounces. The cold infusion or extract makes a valuable tonic. The leaves in poultice are an excellent local application in severe pain or swelling of the bowels, etc.' http://www.herbmed.org/Herbs/Herb124.htm Clinical Trials Meta-analysis of 5 clinical studies indicate feverfew is better than placebo but clinical effectiveness has not been established beyond reasonable doubt Vogler 1998 A randomized, blinded trial with 72 patients found a reduction in number and severity of migraines while duration was unchanged. Brewers Yeast Powder (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 1 lb: K Brewers Yeast Powder (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) 1 lb: K

This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Brewer's yeast, which is often called nutritional yeast, was originally a by-product of the brewing of beer. Brewer's yeast is nutritionally the same as Nutritional yeast, but, as a by-product of beer-brewing, it has a characteristic bitter hops flavor. Nutritional yeast, the same yeast, is grown on mineral enriched molasses instead of hops, and more often used as a food supplement, because it tastes better. At the end of the Nutritional yeast growth period, the culture is pasteurized to kill the yeast. This retains the nutrients, but deactivates the live yeast (i.e. baking yeast) as a food supplement because the live yeast continues to grow in the intestine and actually uses up the vitamin B in the body instead of replenishing the supply. Yeast are single-celled microorganisms that reproduce by budding. They are biologically classified as fungi and are responsible for converting fermentable sugars into alcohol and other byproducts. There are literally hundreds of varieties and strains of yeast. In the past, there were two types of beer yeast: ale yeast (the 'top-fermenting' type, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and lager yeast (the 'bottom-fermenting' type, Saccharomyces uvarum). Today, as a result of recent reclassification of Saccharomyces species, both ale and lager yeast strains are considered to be members of S. cerevisiae. Nutritional and Brewer's yeast contains high levels of many important nutrients, including all of the B vitamins (except for B12), 16 out of 20 amino acids, and 14 different minerals. The amino acids (proteins) in yeast help the body repair tissue and fight disease. Nutritional and Brewer's yeast has a very high protein content, with one tbsp providing 4.6 g, making it a rich source of protein for vegetarians. It is also high in phosphorus. Because yeast is such a rich source of B vitamins, it enhances the roles these vitamins play in the body. The B-complex vitamins help your body metabolize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They also support the nervous system and help maintain the muscles used for digestion. Brewer's yeast is also an important source of chromium. The U.S. FDA recommends 120 mcg of chromium daily, but 90% of Americans are deficient in this important mineral. Chromium has the ability to significantly lower blood cholesterol levels. Mullein Leaf C/S Cert. Organic (Verbascum thapsus) 1 lb: C Mullein Leaf C/S Cert. Organic (Verbascum thapsus) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Mullein makes a sweet, non-biting, mildly sedative smoke, and is recommended by Grieve in that form, as well as a tea or strong decoction. It is also used as an extract, tincture and lotion. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Mullein flower for 'Catarrhs of the respiratory tract.' 'Daily dosage: 3 - 4 g of herb; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use.' 'Actions: Alleviating irritation; Expectorant.' Mullein is a good anti-inflammatory and demulcent respiratory remedy, very kind to the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, reducing inflammation while stimulating fluid production and thus facilitating expectoration. Externally an extract made in olive oil is excellent in soothing and healing any inflamed surface or easing ear problems. Mullein contains about 3% mucilage and small amounts of saponins and tannins. The mucilaginous constituents are primarily responsible for the soothing actions on mucous membranes. The saponins may be responsible for the expectorant actions of mullein. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The Mullein has very markedly demulcent, emollient and astringent properties, which render it useful in pectoral complaints. The whole plant seems to possess slightly sedative and narcotic properties.' 'The dried leaves are sometimes smoked in an ordinary tobacco pipe to relieve the irritation of the respiratory mucus membranes, and will completely control, it is said, the hacking cough of consumption. Mullein is said to be of much value in diarrhoea, from its combination of demulcent with astringent properties, by this combination strengthening the bowels at the same time.' 'In diarrhoea the ordinary infusion is generally given, but when any bleeding of the bowels is present, the decoction prepared with milk is recommended. On the Continent, a sweetened infusion of the flowers strained in order to separate the rough hairs, is considerably used as a domestic remedy in mild catarrhs, colic, etc.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Mullein is demulcent, diuretic, anodyne, and antispasmodic. It is likewise said to possess marked antiperiodic virtues. Besides, it is mildly nervine, controlling irritation, and favoring sleep. Upon the upper portion of the respiratory tract its influence is pronounced, particularly where the larynx and trachea are involved.' 'The infusion is useful in coughs, protracted colds, catarrh, hemoptysis, diarrhoea, dysentery, and piles. It is applicable to dry, hoarse coughs, which occur chiefly at night, as well as to cough associated with an abundant catarrhal discharge.' 'Its diuretic properties are rather weak, yet it is very useful in allaying the acridity of urine, which is present in many diseases.' 'It may be boiled in milk, sweetened, and rendered more palat
