Gall Bladder

When the liver has been stagnant for a long time sediments form in the Gall Bladder. Please also read the stagnant liver symptoms.

Physiology
A hollow inactive organ supplying bile to the digestive tract. Mainly used to emulsify fats and oils.
Damaged By
Excessive amounts of fat and oil, large amounts of spice, very cold liquids and cold dairy products, drafts, planning and thinking ahead all the time, stress.
Supported By
Pickles, good quality vinegar.
Diagnosis
Constantly planning, hypersensitive to drafts, noises and strong smells.

When the liver in constantly stagnant, sediment often settles out of the bile and forms accumulations that resemble stones, sand or mud in the gall bladder.
Symptoms of sediment in the gall bladder:
indigestion, flatulence, periodic pain below the right side of the rib cage, tension in the back of the shoulder near the neck, bitter taste in the mouth, chest pain. Gall Bladder cleansing is recommended for people who have been chronically ill for full recovery.

Gradual Gall Bladder Cleanse

This cleanse takes 21 days, is slower and gentler on the body. This is the one I recommend for those unsure of how much sediment or stones they may have. Cleansing 2 or 3 times a year ensures a healthy gall bladder. During the cleanse avoid all foods high in fat, meats, dairy, eggs. Eat unrefined grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes to help clear the gallbladder. These foods hasten gallstone removal: pears, parsnips, seaweeds, lemons, limes, and the spice turmeric. Radish also remove stones, for the entire 21 days eat 1-2 radishes a day between meals and drink 3 cups of cleavers tea or 5 cups of chamomile tea a day. For every 160 pounds of body weight use 5 teaspoons of cold-pressed flax seed oil. Pour the flax oil over your food during one meal of the day or divide into half and use on 2 meals. Take the flax oil 6 days a week for 2 months.

Gall Bladder Flush

This is a one day purge to cleanse the gall bladder of sediment and stones. Beginning in morning eat only organic apples, at least 5 throughout the day. Green apples help soften the stones more than red. Water, herbal teas can also be drunk. At bed-time warm u 2/3 cup of olive oil to body temperature and mix in 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice. Slowly sip the entire mixture, and then immediately go to bed. Lie on your right side with your right leg drawn up. In the morning all gallstones should pass in the stool. This flush should be done with the guidance of a experienced health practitioner.

5 Day Flush This is a milder, slightly less affective variation of the 1 day flush. Consume apples and radishes for the 5 days. For 5 consecutive days, takes 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons lemon juice on an empty stomach 1 time a day.

Artichoke Leaf Powder (Cynara scolymus) 1 lb: C

Artichoke Leaf Powder (Cynara scolymus) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a dietary supplement. Artichokes are popular in all sorts of food dishes, where the heart of the plant is the part used. The other parts of this herb, such as the head, roots, and leaves, each have known nutritional benefits. Due to its diuretic activities, Artichoke works well in the treatment of kidney diseases. The Globe Artichoke, a relative of the hepatoprotective Milk Thistle, is popular for its pungent taste which is attributed to phytochemicals found in the green parts of the plants called cynaropicrin and cynarin, sesquiterpene lactones with documented medicinal actions. The phytochemicals in artichoke have been well documented and the leaves rather than the flower have been found to be higher in medicinal value. Traditional uses have included support for sluggish liver, poor digestion and atherosclerosis. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Artichoke leaf for 'Dyspeptic problems. Average daily dosage: Drug, 6 g; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Dried, cut leaves, pressed juice of fresh plant, and other galenical preparations for internal use. Action: Choleretic' Research on standardized Artichoke extract has focused on the constituent, caffeoylquinic acid, and its ability to increase bile production in the liver. An increase in bile production assists the body in blood fat metabolism, which assists the digestion process. Cynarin has been shown to increases bile production in the liver, and to increases the flow of bile from the gallbladder, as well as increasing the contractive power of the bile duct, that is, it is 'choleretic.' Choleretics typically lower cholesterol levels because they increase the excretion of cholesterol and decrease the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. Cynara extract from artichoke leaf has been shown to lower blood cholesterol (13%) and triglyceride levels (5%) in both human and animal studies. Consistent with its choleretic effect, Artichokes also possess some diuretic activity, helping with kidney disease and protein in the urine. A recent French patent describes an artichoke extract for treating liver disease, high cholesterol levels and kidney insufficiency. Artichoke has been shown to decrease the rate of cholesterol synthesis in the liver, and other blood fats such as triglycerides are thought to be reduced through the use of artichoke. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The Globe Artichoke (Cynara Scolymus, Linn.) also has a tuberous root, but it is the large flower-buds that form the edible portion of the plant, and it is from a similarity in the flavour of the tuber of the Jerusalem Artichoke to that of the fleshy base of this flower that the Jerusalem Artichoke has obtained its name'. 'The expanded flower has much resemblance to a large thistle - the corollas are of a rich blue colour.' 'It is one of the world's old

Jerusalem Artichoke 500mg 250 tablets: HL

Jerusalem Artichoke 500mg 250 tablets: HL

Jerusalem artichoke, a native of the North American plains, is now grown throughout the world, primarily for tubers which can be eaten fresh or raw, cooked in appetizing ways similar to Irish potatoes, or pickled. The list of beneficial vitamins and minerals found in Helianthus tuberosus is impressive; notably thiamine and potassium. Since the food reserves are stored in the form of inulin (no relation to insulin), the tubers serve as substitutes for potatoes and starches in diabetic diets. They are a potential source of levulose for use in sweetening by diabetics. What makes these natural capsules special is that they are extremely rich in inulin, which stimulates and helps increase friendly bacterial growth in the colon. The more friendly the bacteria...the cleaner the colon is of toxins, impurities, and harmful bacteria. http://medherb.com/92INULIN.HTM Inulin by Paul Bergner Inulin is major constituent of some of the most famous of the ''old-standby'' herbs, such as burdock root, dandelion root, elecampane root, chicory root, and the Chinese herb codonopsis. Botanically, inulin is a storage food in the plants of the Composite family. Inulin when injected interacts with complement system, which has resulted in rumors in herbal circles that it is immunostimulant. It is not digested or absorbed, however, (except perhaps in mico-amounts) and such effects are not observed with oral use. Inulin is recommended sometimes for diabetics; it has a mildly sweet taste, and is filling like starchy foods, but because it is not absorbed, it does not affect blood sugar levels. Despite the similarity of its name to insulin, inulin has no connection with that hormone either chemically or through physiological activity. Inulin is soluble in hot water, but only slightly soluble in cold water or alcohol, so is not present to any significant extent in tinctures. All the above herbs have traditionally been taken in decoctions, and in this form may deliver significant amounts of inulin. Recent research has shown an important physiological action for inulin (Gibson, Roberfroid). Like some pectins and fructooligosaccharides, inulin is a preferred food for the lactobacilli in the intestine and can improve the balance of friendly bacteria in the bowel. Subjects in one trial were give 15 grams of inulin a day for fifteen days. Lactobacillus bifidobacteria increased by about 10% during that period. Gram-positive bacteria associated with disease declined. Bifidobacteria digest inulin to produce short chain fatty-acids, such as acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. The first two may be used by the liver for energy production, while butyric acid has cancer-preventing properties within the intestine (Spiller, 1994). Recent animal research also shows that inulin prevents precancerous changes in the colon (Reddy, 1997).

Choline & Inositol Caps 500 mg 100 capsules: K

Choline & Inositol Caps 500 mg 100 capsules: K

Choline & Inositol are members of the B-vitamin family. Choline is found in most animal tissues and is necessary for normal synaptic transmission, helping in the manufacture of neurotransmitters (for optimum nervous system functioning). Inositol is included as a synergist and assists choline in the metabolism of cholesterol and fat in the liver. Choline is an important fat emulsifier involved in the biosynthesis of lecithin and the formulation of the amino acid Methionine. It aids in emulsifying cholesterol so it doesn't settle on the arterial walls. Inositol is a simple carbohydrate which has been demonstrated to exert activity by transporting fat through the blood system. Inositol, Choline and Methionine are integrally involved in how the liver handles fats. This powerful nutrient trio triggers your body to burn off excess fat. Choline/Inositol is a common source of lecithin that may be helpful for Parkinson's disease, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis, baldness, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, eczema, alcoholism, muscular dystrophy, hypertension and disease of the nervous system. Twinlab Choline & Inositol Caps are easier to swallow and assimilate. Well tolerated by most highly allergic individuals.

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) 100 capsules: K

Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) 100 capsules: K

Nature's Herbs Wild Countryside Dandelion root grows in rich fertile meadows of Europe. This unwelcome inhabitant of lawns is actually quite beneficial for the body. American Indians combined the Dandelion leaves with the roots (which are said to contain more vitamin A than carrots) to brew a healthy herbal tea. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Dandelion herb for 'Loss of appetite and dyspepsia, such as feeling of fullness and flatulence.' 'Dosage: 4 - 10 g of herb 3 times daily; 4 - 10 ml liquid extract 1:1 in 25 percent alcohol 3 times daily. Mode of Administration: Cut herb for infusions, as well as for liquid preparations for internal use. Duration of Administration: Unlimited.' The principal constituents responsible for dandelion’s action on the digestive system and liver are sesquiterpene lactones that are unique to dandelion. Studies show dandelion to be a powerful diuretic. Dandelion's bitter compounds increase the gallbladder's production of bile. This improves liver function and the body's metabolism of fats. This, in turn, has the effect of stimulating digestion and appetite. Dandelion also acts as a mild laxative. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Diuretic, tonic and slightly aperient [laxative]. It is a general stimulant to the system, but especially to the urinary organs, and is chiefly used in kidney and liver disorders. Dandelion is not only official but is used in many patent medicines. Not being poisonous, quite big doses of its preparations may be taken. Its beneficial action is best obtained when combined with other agents.' 'In the hepatic complaints of persons long resident in warm climates, Dandelion is said to afford very marked relief. A broth of Dandelion roots, sliced and stewed in boiling water with some leaves of Sorrel and the yolk of an egg, taken daily for some months, has been known to cure seemingly intractable cases of chronic liver congestion.' 'Dandelion is used as a bitter tonic in atonic dyspepsia, and as a mild laxative in habitual constipation. When the stomach is irritated and where active treatment would be injurious, the decoction or extract of Dandelion administered three or four times a day, will often prove a valuable remedy. It has a good effect in increasing the appetite and promoting digestion.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'It is valuable in combination with other remedies of similar action, in chronic jaundice, in conditions attributable to auto-intoxication, in rheumatism and in blood disorders, as an alterative. It is especially an alterative for chronic eruptions, and unhealthy conditions of the skin.' 'It will stimulate the stomach, and is useful in chronic catarrhal gastritis with perversion of nutrition. In aphthous ulcerations of the mouth it is useful.' Eclectic Materia Medica, 1922 (Felter): 'If prepared from recent root, taraxacum preparations may be classed with the simple

Menthol Crystals ½ lb: K

Menthol Crystals ½ lb: K

This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Menthol, the major constituent of Peppermint Oil, is one of the main ingredients in Peppermint. It looks like a rock crystal when isolated. It is obtained from various species of Mentha. It has a strong odor of peppermint, and a warm aromatic taste followed by a sensation of cold on drawing air into the mouth. Menthol's refreshing aroma and cooling action, along with its stimulant and anti-septic qualities have led to its widespread use for medicinal purposes in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is used: As a flavoring agent (candy, gum, cigarettes, cough drops, and so on) In some cold sore medications In some ointments to treat aches and pains (Ben-Gay, Therapeutic Mineral Ice) As an inhalant, lozenge, or ointment to treat nasal congestion In liniments to relieve pain and itching In some medications to treat sore mouth/throat/gums In some mouthwashes The British Journal of Medicine in 1879 wrote of Peppermint 'that Menthol relieves Headaches and Neuralgia,' shortly after it was admitted into the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. A menthol inhalation is the best way to clear the sinuses and relieve the stuffiness and headaches associated with catarrh. Put one small menthol crystal into a bowl of hot water or an herbal infusion and then breathe in the rising vapour. Menthol is strong, and must be used very sparingly. Menthol is too strong for little children, and can cause them to gag. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Peppermint oil for 'Internal: Spastic discomfort of the upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts, irritable colon, catarrhs of the respiratory tract, inflammation of the oral mucosa. External: Myalgia and neuralgia.' 'Peppermint oil consists of the essential oil of Mentha piperita... Peppermint oil contains a minimum of 4.5 percent and a maximum of 10 percent (w/w) esters, calculated as menthyl acetate, at least 44 percent (w/w) free alcohols, calculated as menthol and a minimum of 15 percent and maximum of 32 percent (w/w) ketones, calculated as menthone.' 'Contraindications: Obstruction of bile ducts, gallbladder inflammation, severe liver damage. In case of gallstones, to be used only after consultation with a physician. Preparations containing peppermint oil should not be used on the face, particularly the nose, of infants and small children.' 'Actions: Antispasmodic; Carminative; Cholagogue; Antibacterial; Secretolytic; Cooling.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The chief constituent of Peppermint oil is Menthol, but it also contains menthyl acetate and isovalerate, together with menthone, cineol, inactive pinene, limonene and other less important bodies.' 'On cooling to a low temperature, separation of Menthol occurs, especially if a few crystals of that substance be added to start crystallization

Prickly Ash Bark C/S (Zanthoxylum americanum) 1 lb: K

This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture, liniment and poultice. Prickly Ash may be used as a tea or decoction for rheumatism and skin diseases. This herb has the reputation of being helpful for problems of circulation, such as chilblains, cramp in the leg, varicose veins and varicose ulcers. Externally it is helpful as a stimulating liniment for rheumatism and fibrositis. The bark and berries are chemically complex, containing the alkaloids magnoflorine, fagarine, nitidine, laurifoline, chelerythrine, candicine and tambetarine; and the coumarins zanthoxyletin, xanthyletin and alloxanthyletin, as well as resins and tannins. Herculin, an alkamide in the plant, acts like a topical anesthetic. In a recent Chinese hospital trial, Prickly Ash berries, which are chemically similar to the bark, helped with intestinal pain from various causes, including indigestion, ulcers and gallbladder disease. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'It acts as a stimulant - resembling guaiacum resin and mezereon bark in its remedial action and is greatly recommended in the United States for chronic rheumatism, typhoid and skin diseases and impurity of the blood, administered either in the form of fluid extract or in doses of 10 grains to ½ drachm in the powdered form, three times daily.' 'On account of the energetic stimulant properties of the bark, it produces when swallowed a sense of heat in the stomach, with more or less general arterial excitement and tendency to perspiration and is a useful tonic in debilitated conditions of the stomach and digestive organs, and is used in colic, cramp and colera, in fever, ague, lethargy, for cold hands and feet and complaints arising from a bad circulation.' 'A decoction made by boiling an ounce in 3 pints of water down to a quarter may be given in the quantity of a pint, in divided doses, during the twenty-four hours. As a counter-irritant, the decoction may be applied on compresses. It has also been used as an emmenagogue.' 'The powdered bark forms an excellent application to indolent ulcers and old wounds for cleansing, stimulating, drying up and healing the wounds. The pulverized bark is also used for paralytic affections and nervous headaches and as a topical irritant the bark, either in powdered form, or chewed, has been a very popular remedy for toothache in America, hence the origin of a common name of the tree in the States: Toothache Tree.' 'The berries are considered even more active than the bark, being carminative and antispasmodic, and are used as an aperient and for dyspepsia and indigestion; a fluid extract of the berries being given, in doses of 10 to 30 drops.' 'Xanthoxylin. Dose, 1 to 2 grains.' 'Both berries and bark are used to make a good bitter.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Physiologically, prickly ash acts upon the secretions, the nervous and circulator sy

Purnarnava Herb Powder (Boerhaavia diffusa; Erva Tostão) 120 vegicaps: B

Erva Tostão is a vigorous growing weedy vine found in many tropical and warm-climate countries from Brazil to India. The roots of Erva Tostão have held an important place in herbal medicine in both Brazil and India for many years. In Brazil, Erva Tostão is considered 'a plant medicine of great importance, extraordinarily beneficial in the treatment of liver disorders.' It is most often used as a tea or thick boiled decoction. It is employed in Brazilian herbal medicine as a chologogue (stimulating the flow of bile from the liver) and diuretic, for all types of liver disorders including jaundice and hepatitis, for gallbladder pain and stones, urinary tract and renal disorders and calculi, and for cystitis. Erva Tostão is called Purnarnava or Punarnava in India where it has a long history of use by indigenous and tribal people, and in Aruyvedic or natural/herbal medicine in India. There, the roots are employed for many purposes including liver, gallbladder, kidney, renal and urinary disorders. The worldwide use of Erva Tostão roots for various liver complaints and disorders were validated when researchers demonstrated in 1980 and again in 1991 that a root extract provided antihepatotoxic properties in animals; protecting the liver from numerous introduced toxins. In other clinical studies with animals, a root extract demonstrated smooth muscle and skeletal muscle stimulant activity in frogs and guinea pigs; hypotensive actions in dogs as well as in-vitro hypotensive actions; antispasmodic actions in frogs and guinea pigs; antiamebic actions in rats; and hemostatic or antihemorrhaging properties in monkeys with IUDs. The traditional use of Erva Tostão for convulsions and epilepsy was verified by scientists in two studies demonstrating that a root extract provided anti-convulsant action in mice. In vitro testing of Erva Tostão root extract show that has antibacterial properties including against gonorrhea, antinematodal properties and antiviral actions against several viral plant pathogens. The diuretic action of Erva Tostão has been studied and validated by scientists in several studies which help to explain its long history of use in various kidney and urinary conditions. Researchers showed in the mid 1950's that low dosages (10mg/kg to 300mg/kg) produced strong diuretic effects while higher dosages (>300mg/kg) produced the opposite effect, reducing urine output. Other researchers who followed, verified these diuretic and anti-diuretic properties as well as the beneficial kidney and renal effects of Erva Tostão roots in animals and humans. Research indicates that a root extract can increase urine output by as much as 100% in a 24 hour period at dosages as low as 10mg per kilogram of body weight.

Rosemary Leaf Whole Cert. Organic (Rosmarinus officinalis) 1 lb: C

Rosemary Leaf Whole Cert. Organic (Rosmarinus officinalis) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Sweet-smelling Rosemary is a traditional meat preservative. As Rosemary doesn't lose its flavor by long cooking, it is popular in meat dishes, soups, stews, souffles and breads. Rosemary is used in the French herbes de Provençe and bouquet garni, and to flavor vinegar. It is, however, quite strong, and must not be overused. Rosemary’s traditional role in herbal medicine is confirmed by modern research. Eucalyptol (cineole) is a potent antibacterial that relaxes the lung's smooth muscles. Carnosol inhibits cancer formation. Rosmarinic acid is only one of Rosemary's many proven antioxidants. This, of course, explains its traditional role in meat and food preservation. 'Antioxidant' also helps to explain Rosemary's traditional use for headache and depression. Rosemary's memory enhancing properties have long been appreciated. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine, an important element of memory, seems to be protected from breakdown by Rosemary. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Rosemary leaf for 'Internal: Dyspeptic complaints. External: Supportive therapy for rheumatic diseases, circulatory problems.' 'Daily dosage: 4 - 6 g of herb; 10 - 20 drops of essential oil;* equivalent preparations. External: 50 g of herb for one full bath; 6 - 10 percent essential oil in semi-solid and liquid preparations; equivalent preparations. Animal tests have demonstrated Rosemary’s ability to control spasms in the gallbladder and upper intestine, improve the flow of blood to the heart, and strengthen the action of the heart muscle. This has a toning and calming effect on the digestion, especially where psychological tension is present. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, astringent, diaphoretic, stimulant. Oil of Rosemary has the carminative properties of other volatile oils and is an excellent stomachic and nervine, curing many cases of headache.' 'It is employed principally, externally, as spiritus Rosmarini, in hair-lotions, for its odour and effect in stimulating the hair-bulbs to renewed activity and preventing premature baldness.' 'An infusion of the dried plant (both leaves and flowers) combined with borax and used when cold, makes one of the best hairwashes known. Cleavers Herb C/S Cert. Organic (Galium aparine) 1 lb: C Cleavers Herb C/S Cert. Organic (Galium aparine) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, tincture and salve. A tea made from the dried plant is useful for skin problems. It is applied daily and allowed to dry. A skin salve can be made by mixing a thick decoction with butter or oilive oil. Cleavers is popularly used in Europe for healing wounds and sores. Cleavers is also a powerful diuretic, helpful for such serious urinary problems as cystitis. What research has been done on Cleavers indicates that galiosin, an anthraquinone glycoside, other glycosides, tannins, and flavonoids are the active constituents. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Modern herbalists and homoeopaths still recognize the value of this herb, and as an alterative consider it may be given to advantage in scurvy, scrofula, psoriasis and skin diseases and eruptions generally.' 'As it is a rather powerful diuretic, care should be taken that it is not given where a tendency to diabetes is manifested. Its use, however, is recommended in dropsical complaints, as it operates with considerable power upon the urinary secretion and the urinary organs. It is given in obstructions of these organs, acting as a solvent of stone in the bladder.' 'The dried plant is often infused in hot water and drunk as a tea, 1 oz. of the dried herb being infused to 1 pint of water. This infusion, either hot or cold, is taken frequently in wine-glassful doses.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'A most valuable refrigerant and diuretic, and will be found very beneficial in many diseases of the urinary organs, as suppression of urine, calculous affections, inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, and in the scalding of urine in gonorrhoea.' 'It is contraindicated in diseases of a passive character, on account of its refrigerant and sedative effects on the system, but may be used freely in fevers and all acute diseases. It has been recommended in scorbutic and nervous affections, but can not be depended upon. Growth or deposits of a nodular character in the skin or mucous membranes are regarded as indications for its use.' 'An infusion may be made by macerating 1½ ounces of the herb in a pint of warm water for 2 hours, of which from 2 to 4 fluid ounces may be given 3 or 4 times a day, when cold. It may be sweetened with sugar or honey.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'A sedative remedy in acute inflammation or irritation of the urinary tract. Given in fever it impresses the temperature favorably, stimulates the excretion of all urinary constituents and the fever is shortened by its use. It is given for its general tonic influence upon the urinary tract.' 'An infusion is the most active form. It is useful in dysuria if from acute inflammation, and it is an excellent remedy for suppression when nephritis has occurred from septic causes. It is useful in strangury in vesical irritation from uterine disorder and in the cystic and prostatic irritation of old men.'
