Flower Bundle Force Some Early Blooms

A great way to lift your spirits in the midst of winter ho hum is to give yourself some new blooms.

Many of our bushes can be tricked into believing its Spring and giving us an early showy blooms. Forcing cut branches by bringing them indoors can produce blooms as much as 2 months ahead of normal blooming time. If you are behind on your pruning, get the job done now and enjoy the extra bonus of new blooms. Some of the plants that are good candidates for inside forcing are, Willows, viburnums, weigela, lilacs, dogwood and holly. February is the best time to cut and force early bloomers such as forsythia, plum, quince, cherry and willow. March you can cut the later bloomers like lilac, dogwood, apple and viburnum.

Here's How:
Cut branches during the warmest part of a mild day to ensure the most sap in branches. Cut branches at an angle or normal good pruning practices.
Mash the bottom inch of the stems with a hammer to ensure rapid uptake of water. Place the branches in water, add a drop of bleach and some sugar into the water. This will reduce bacteria in the water and lengthen the stems life. Change the water every few days and place in a cool, dark spot until buds begin to form.
To coax the branches out of dormancy moisture is needed. Usually intake from the stems is enough but you may wish to wrap the stems in burlap or spray the branches to increase moisture especially in dry conditions.
When buds begin to swell move your container of stems to a brighten location to encourage flowering and aid in color development. Cool temperatures are best for quality blooms and avoid direct sunlight. Arrange your branches in a nice container and enjoy!

Easter Tree
One of our family traditions is to force willow branches so they have pussy's come Easter. We then decorate our Easter tree with ribbons and painted pieces of eggshell. Kids love decorating the tree especially when mud prevents alot of outdoor activity. Be creative with finding bits and pieces of shiny bits around the house to add to your tree. I believe this tradition comes from Norway so added activity could be exploring some of the food Norwegians eat at Easter time and trying out some different recipes.
