COMMENTS:
This herb has woody-based stems, with pairs of small, balsamic-scented leaves and clusters of lemon scented, yellow summer flowers. Upper aireal parts and flowers are picked when first in bloom. Tincture will turn a red color when collected at correct time. As this plant grows along roadsides and waste areas it is adviced you collect the herb from meadows to avoid any toxicity from roadside sprays and vehicles. Research shows this herb should be used fresh or frozen freeze-dried, but not dried. Gather seeds approx 1 month after blooms die or towards the end of September in the Kootenays.
Uses: The leaves are used in salads and to flavor liquers. Extracts of the flowering tops is antiviral, astringent, and sedative. It treats inflammation, wounds, and diarrhea and improves blood flow. It is applied to cuts, burns, hemorrhoids, and varicose veins. Taken internally, it calms nerves and treats depression. It is under research for AIDS treatment. Some consider it unsafe as can cause dermatitus and sensitivity to sunlight.
St. John's Worts flowers can be used as a natural dye. Depending on strength, colors can be yellow, green, red, and pink.
