COMMENTS:
This woody perennial has pungent, dark green leaves, and clusters of flowers in late summer. The strain I am growing and selling is known as Greek Oregano. This strain is extremely strong and flavor lasts dried the whole year. The best I have found and grown.
Uses: Oregano leaves have a powerful, peppery flavor, used in Italian pizza and tomato dishes. Mexican chili powders, and as a garnish. The tea is a tonic and relieves coughs, muscle spasms, nervous headaches, and menstrual pain. The leaves are antiseptic and applied to swellings, rheumatism, and stiff necks. The flowering tops yield a reddish dye. The essential oil is a powerful antiseptic, useful in room sprays. The leaves can be chewed for temporary releif from toothache.
Cough Remedy: All oreganos contain the chemicals carvacrol and thymol which are known for their expectorant qualities. You may also wish to see these pages:Cough Test, Cold & Flu Recipes, Lungs & Sore Throat.
Digestion Aid: Oregano helps soothe the smooth muscle lining of the digestive tract making it an antispasmodic. It may also help to expel parasitic intestinal worms.
Dosage: Use 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb per cup of water. Steep 10 minutes and drink up to 3 cups per day.
Rosenkuppel Oregano - $ 15.95 The Rosenkuppel Oregano, Origanum laevigatum, is a great ground cover used in mass or alone. It forms attractive mats of round dark green leaves that are the perfect backdrop for its beautiful, ornamental dark pink flowers. Its contrasting purple calyces really make this plant stand out amongst the rest. Blooming from August to October, it has a plant height of 15" and a width of 24". Oregano needs to be planted in a full sun area with well drained soil. Try planting with Pennisetum 'Little Bunny'.
Greek Oregano - $ 2.69 The Oregano Greek, 'Origanum heracleoticum', will jazz up a multitude of foods. This is the true, culinary oregano not often found in seed packets. The Greek Oregano is prized by Italian chefs. This 2 foot wide by 2 foot tall plant has small white flowers. The Greek Oregano is considered the best variety for cooking and is also considered the hardiest and strongest oregano plant. Plants should be sheared severely at least 2 times per year to encourage fullness and new tender growth.
Sweet Marjoram - $ 1.39 The Marjoram Sweet, 'Origanum majorana', has a sweeter, milder flavor than Oregano. It is wonderful when used fresh in many dishes. Some describe the flavor as having a hint of balsam. Try substituting Sweet Marjoram for Oregano in many popular dishes such as eggplant, Parmesan, or pizza. The plants are bushy, 1 to 2 foot tall and 2 foot wide. Plant in the spring in well drained soil. Legend has it that if you touch Sweet Marjoram before bedtime, you will dream of your future spouse.
