COMMENTS:
Milk Thistle also commonly called Blessed Thistle is a very striking plant to have in the garden. This biennial has grooved stems, lobed, mottled green leaves with pale yellow spines, and purple flowers.

Uses: The whole plant is edible and aids digestion. The seeds and leaves have been given for low milk flow, coughs, and depression. It benefits the liver, gallbladder, and spleen. Since silymarin in the seeds was discovered to protect the liver from many toxins, including death-cap mushrooms, extracts have been used to reduce damage from alcohol and drugs, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and cadmium poisoning. It is taken to prevent travel sickness and heart disease. The seed should be used only by qualified practioners. As silymarin is not water soluble this must be used as a tincture only to be of benefit.

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a decoction, extract and tincture. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Milk Thistle ripe seed: 'The drug contains silibinin, silydianin, and silychristin. Uses: Crude drug: Dyspeptic complaints. Formulations [an extract standardized to at least 70 percent silymarin, the collective name for the three compounds listed]: Toxic liver damage; for supportive treatment in chronic inflammatory liver disease and hepatic cirrhosis.' 'Average daily dose of drug: 12 - 15 g; Formulations equivalent to 200 - 400 mg of silymarin, calculated as silibinin. Mode of Administration: Powdered drug for making infusions and other galenical formulations to be taken by mouth.' 'Actions: Silymarin acts as an antagonist in many experimental liver-damage models: phalloidin and -amanitin (death-cap toxins), lanthanides, carbon tetrachloride, galactosamine, thioacetamide, and the hepatotoxic virus FV3 of cold-blooded vertebrates. The therapeutic activity of silymarin is based on two sites or mechanisms of action: (a) it alters the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes in such a way as to prevent penetration of the liver toxin into the interior of the cell; (b) it stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in an increase in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of new hepatocytes.' Milk thistle is believed to protect the cells of the liver by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping to remove these toxins from the liver cells. Milk thistle seeds contain a bioflavonoid complex known as silymarin. As with other bioflavonoids, silymarin is a powerful antioxidant. Milk thistle also regenerates injured liver cells. Milk thistle extract is most commonly recommended to counteract the harmful actions of alcohol on the liver. Long-term placebo-controlled, double blind studies have shown milk thistle extracts to be effective in patients with liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and even diabetes due to cirrhosis. Milk thistle alters bile makeup, thereby potentially reducing risk of gallstones. Since silymarin is not very soluble in water, a strong boiled decoction of the ground seeds is most effective, rather than a weak infusion (tea). More effective yet is the standardized extract. A recent case report of chronic infection by hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus demonstrated potential efficacy of treatment with milk thistle (10 g ground-up seeds in oatmeal with standardized (70%) milk thistle extract capsules three times daily) in combination with another herb known for its hepatoprotectant activity, Phyllanthus amarus (200 mg, three times daily). Milk Thistle Seed Simple/Single Plant Extract 1 oz Milk Thistle Seed Simple/Single Plant Extract 1 oz

Herbal extracts are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilated into the system. Depending on the herb, extracts can be taken as tonics (herbs that can build the energy of the organ systems), and for the treatment of acute situations. Depending on the properties of the herb, the extracts are derived from fresh, whole plants, or, in the case of plants that have very strong organic fixed principles (eg. resins, gums and seeds) the plants are first dried before extraction. In general, tinctures represent an herb strength of one part herb for every five parts menstruum (the fluid used in extraction - alcohol, glycerine or vinegar). Extracts generally provide a dry or fresh herb strength ratio of one part herb for every two parts of menstruum. It is in popular use in Germany for curing jaundice and kindred biliary derangements. It also acts as a demulcent in catarrh and pleurisy. Culpepper considered the Milk Thistle to be as efficient as Carduus benedictus for agues, and preventing and curing the infection of the plague, and also for removal of obstructions of the liver and spleen. He recommends the infusion of the fresh root and seeds, not only as good against jaundice, also for breaking and expelling stone and be

Dandelion & Milk Thistle 60 capsules: K Dandelion & Milk Thistle 60 capsules: K

Dandelion & Milk Thistle is an herbal combination to help cleanse, protect and regenerate the liver, which may play a beneficial role in liver and gallbladder disorders, hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, psoriasis, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and protection against toxins. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Dandelion herb for 'Loss of appetite and dyspepsia, such as feeling of fullness and flatulence.' 'Dosage: 4 - 10 g of herb 3 times daily; 4 - 10 ml liquid extract 1:1 in 25 percent alcohol 3 times daily. Mode of Administration: Cut herb for infusions, as well as for liquid preparations for internal use. Duration of Administration: Unlimited.' The principal constituents responsible for dandelions action on the digestive system and liver are sesquiterpene lactones that are unique to dandelion. Studies show dandelion to be a powerful diuretic. Dandelion's bitter compounds increase the gallbladder's production of bile. This improves liver function and the body's metabolism of fats. This, in turn, has the effect of stimulating digestion and appetite. Dandelion also acts as a mild laxative. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Diuretic, tonic and slightly aperient [laxative]. It is a general stimulant to the system, but especially to the urinary organs, and is chiefly used in kidney and liver disorders. Dandelion is not only official but is used in many patent medicines. Not being poisonous, quite big doses of its preparations may be taken. Its beneficial action is best obtained when combined with other agents.' 'In the hepatic complaints of persons long resident in warm climates, Dandelion is said to afford very marked relief. A broth of Dandelion roots, sliced and stewed in boiling water with some leaves of Sorrel and the yolk of an egg, taken daily for some months, has been known to cure seemingly intractable cases of chronic liver congestion.' 'Dandelion is used as a bitter tonic in atonic dyspepsia, and as a mild laxative in habitual constipation. When the stomach is irritated and where active treatment would be injurious, the decoction or extract of Dandelion administered three or four times a day, will often prove a valuable remedy. It has a good effect in increasing the appetite and promoting digestion.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'It is valuable in combination with other remedies of similar action, in chronic jaundice, in conditions attributable to auto-intoxication, in rheumatism and in blood disorders, as an alterative. It is especially an alterative for chronic eruptions, and unhealthy conditions of the skin.' The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Milk Thistle ripe seed: 'The drug contains silibinin, silydianin, and silychristin.
