COMMENTS:
Holy Thistle is a hairy annual with red stems, spiny toothed leaves, and summer to autumn flower heads. It will self seed but I have not found it invasive at all. The leaves and flowering tops are collected in July, just as the plant breaks into flower. After the first cutting the plant regenerates and a second fall cutting is usually possible.

Uses: The leaves, flower heads, and roots are edible. Use young leaves in salads. Contains the bitter volatile oil cnicin (sesquiterpene lactone). Even the stems are good medicine. The tea stimulates appetite and aids digestion, diminishes migraine headaches and has anti-inflammatory properties. Helps to expel phlegm, and can be applied to wounds and infections. Taken as a tonic to purify and strengthen circulation. The leaves, dried and powdered, are good for worms.

Infusion Dosage: 1 OZ. of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water.

Blessed Thistle Herb C/S Cert. Organic (Cnicus benedictus) 1 lb: C Blessed Thistle Herb C/S Cert. Organic (Cnicus benedictus) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion and extract. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Blessed Thistle for 'Loss of appetite, dyspepsia. Contraindications. Side Effects: Allergic reactions are possible. Mean daily dosage: 4 - 6 g of herb; equivalent preparations accordingly. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb and dried extracts for teas; bitter-tasting galenical preparations for internal use. Action: Stimulation of the secretion of saliva and gastric juices.' Blessed Thistle's sesquiterpene lactones are responisble for the action described above. These bitter components also serve as hormonal balancers, particularly for the female reproductive organs. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, stimulant, diaphoretic, emetic and emmenagogue. It is chiefly used now for nursing mothers, the warm infusion scarcely ever failing to procure a proper supply of milk. It is considered one of the best medicines which can be used for the purpose. In large doses, Blessed Thistle acts as a strong emetic, producing vomiting with little pain and inconvenience.' 'Cold infusions in smaller draughts are valuable in weak and debilitated conditions of the stomach, and as a tonic, creating appetite and preventing sickness. The warm infusion - 1 oz. of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water - in doses of a wineglassful, forms in intermittent fevers one of the most useful diaphoretics to which employment can be given.' 'Four different ways of using Blessed Thistle have been recommended: It may be eaten in the green leaf, with bread and butter for breakfast, like Watercress; the dried leaves may be made into a powder and a drachm taken in wine or otherwise every day; a wineglassful of the juice may be taken every day, or, which is the usual and the best method, an infusion may be made of the dried herb, taken any time as a preventive, or when intended to remove disease, at bed time, as it causes copious perspiration.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Their odor is faint and rather disagreeable, and their taste is exceedingly bitter. Their properties are yielded to water or alcohol, forming a pleasantly-bitter draught when infused with the former fluid, but a sickening and repulsive decoction.' 'A cold infusion is tonic; a warm infusion diaphoretic and emmenagogue; and, if strong, emetic.' 'Used as a tonic in loss of appetite, dyspepsia, and intermittent diseases.' 'Valuable also in the forming stage of febrile and inflammatory affections. Colds may be broken up with it, and it acts well in menstrual suppression from cold.' 'Dose of the powder, from 10 to 60 grains; of the infusion, 2 fluid ounces; specific cnicus benedictus, 5 to 10 drops, every 4 hours.'

Japanese Thistle (Cirsium segetum; Small Thistle; Da Xiao Ji) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V Japanese Thistle (Cirsium segetum; Small Thistle; Da Xiao Ji) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V

This is a potent 5 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that one gram of extract is equal in potency to 5 grams of herb. This extract is packed in Plum Flower Brand's nitrogen-flushed, safety-sealed dispenser bottle, a sample of which is pictured above. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. This is a pure herbal product with no additives. Extracted from sulfur-free and chlorine-free herbs for superior quality. Manufactured in a low-temperature water extraction process to preserve herb integrity. Extracted essential oils are replenished for proper potency. Strict quality control testing to ensure microbiological and heavy metal safety. Only powdered herb added to maintain purity (no artificial fillers such as lactose, cellulose or starch used). TLC (Thin-layer Chromatography) tested to guarantee product quality. Plum Flower takes great care to preserve delicate herbal oils, which are first evaporated using either a water or water-alcohol base in a process that never exceeds 100° centigrade. Sealed vacuum chargers precisely control the temperature, ensuring that none of the oils are lost. Cheaper, high-temperature methods are common industry practice, but these tend to burn off the vital oils. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Governments Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world. Varuna Fulfillment Center items are special ordered. These take an extra week to deliver.

Japanese Thistle (Cirsium segetum; Small Thistle; Da Xiao Ji) Powdered: 500 gm (1.17 lb): V Japanese Thistle (Cirsium segetum; Small Thistle; Da Xiao Ji) Powdered: 500 gm (1.17 lb): V

This is Plum Flower brand's nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. Sulfur Free, Chlorine Free, Aluminum Phosphate Free. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. Herbs that are preservative free are more natural looking and are generally darker. The brightness of the herbs may be appealing, but it indicates the presence of harmful additives. Despite their appearance, unsulfured herbs are more fresh and safer than regular commercially available products. The use of sulfur, chlorine and aluminum phosphate was made unnecessary through the establishment of Plum Flower processing stations in China. Herb harvesters slice and process the herbs fresh, avoiding the need to rehydrate dried herbs later to process. This first step is crucial, as rehydration leads to decomposition and thus the need for preservatives. The herbs are then packed and the packages vacuum-packed, injected with nitrogen, and sealed. The nitrogen process combined with the lack of sulfur treatment inhibits the growth of anaerobic organisms, resulting in safer, higher quality herbs. After opening, store in a cool dry place. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present.
