COMMENTS:
Holy Thistle is a hairy annual with red stems, spiny toothed leaves, and summer to autumn flower heads. It will self seed but I have not found it invasive at all. The leaves and flowering tops are collected in July, just as the plant breaks into flower. After the first cutting the plant regenerates and a second fall cutting is usually possible.
Uses: The leaves, flower heads, and roots are edible. Use young leaves in salads. Contains the bitter volatile oil cnicin (sesquiterpene lactone). Even the stems are good medicine. The tea stimulates appetite and aids digestion, diminishes migraine headaches and has anti-inflammatory properties. Helps to expel phlegm, and can be applied to wounds and infections. Taken as a tonic to purify and strengthen circulation. The leaves, dried and powdered, are good for worms.
Infusion Dosage: 1 OZ. of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water.
