COMMENTS:
This deciduous, thorny shrub has serrated, lobed leaves; dense, white flower clusters in late spring, and red false fruit (haws).
Uses: The leaves, flowers, and haws are a cardiac and circulation tonic, treating heart weakness caused by kidney disease, thickening tissue, artery spasm, and irregular heartbeat. Hawthorn dilates the heart's blood vessels and improves pumping, which controls both high and low blood pressure. Japenese research has confirmed improvement in cardiac function. During World War I, young Hawthorn leaves were used as substitutes for tea and tobacco, and the seeds were ground in place of coffee.
Dosage: Use 2 teaspoons of crushed leaves and haws to 1 cup boiling water. Steep 20 minutes. Drink up to 2 cups per day.
