COMMENTS:
This is a beautiful climbing vine, with a huge, perennial, bulbous root. Needs to be heavily mulched to withstand cold winters outside. I planted Fo-Ti around my small pond, in hopes it would naturalize the look and cover any of the plastic showing. In the first year, planting out small cuttings it has taken over and have to cut in back as it is reaching far and wide and even into the pond. However its red stems and vibrant green foliage is well worth the work of having to prune it regularly. It covers the ground but also has an upward reach, and thus the rock waterfall is now also very natural looking. All those other delicate slow growing rock plants I put in at the same time? Well lets just say I am sure, if I eat enough Fo-Ti, my memory of exact placement will come back to me, and I will find them somewhere under the Fo-Ti. It is great to have a program like GrowIt Gold that will find the plants for you, the only problem is one does need to put that information in first!

Uses: The reddish brown tuberous root grows to enormous proportions, used as a longevity and sexual tonic for men and to help build blood. Tonic, laxative, antispasmodic, antibacterial used in China to treat dizziness tetanus, cramps, prematurely gray hair, and to increase mental clarity. See anti-aging products. Roots are used to restore blood, liver and kidneys, and is precribed for conditions as varied as vertigo, insomnia, lumbago and constipation. Recent evidence shows it to be effective against high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries and veins.

NOTE: The linked words above will take you to products for that condition. You may also like to see the articles on Heart Health, & Kidney health.

Fo-Ti Root Thin Sliced (Polygonum multiflorum; He Shou Wu) 1 lb: C Fo-Ti Root Thin Sliced (Polygonum multiflorum; He Shou Wu) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a tea or decoction. Fo-ti use is ancient in China, especially as a tonic and restorative for the elderly. It is identified as a Qi tonic, that is, an herb that benefits the immune system and has hormonal effects. It is a traditonal treatment for poor sleep. The herb is regarded as a slow-acting sedative, that is, a systemic sedative the benefits of which are felt over a period of months. Fo-ti is rich in phospholipids (such as lecithin), anthraquinones (rhein, emodin and chysophanol), tannins, and tetrahydroxystilbene glucoside. Animal and test tube research has confirmed traditional Chinese usages, showing Fo-Ti to lower blood fat, increase red blood cell production, fight bacteria, stimulate immune functions and have a mild laxative effect. Oklahoma State University was assigned a U.S. patent (Patent 5,531,991 issued July 2, 1996) for an extract of Polygonum multiflorum designed to treat hyperglycemia. The extract was developed by Professors Nan-Zheng Cheng and Barbara Stoecker. Three fractions of extracts were shown to potentiate insulin activity in fat cell assays and lower blood glucose levels in animal studies.

Fo-ti Vine (Polygonum Multiflorum; Fleeceflower Stem; Ye Jiao Teng) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V Fo-ti Vine (Polygonum Multiflorum; Fleeceflower Stem; Ye Jiao Teng) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V

This is a potent 5 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that one gram of extract is equal in potency to 5 grams of herb. This extract is packed in Plum Flower Brand's nitrogen-flushed, safety-sealed dispenser bottle, a sample of which is pictured above. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. This is a pure herbal product with no additives. Extracted from sulfur-free and chlorine-free herbs for superior quality. Manufactured in a low-temperature water extraction process to preserve herb integrity. Extracted essential oils are replenished for proper potency. Strict quality control testing to ensure microbiological and heavy metal safety. Only powdered herb added to maintain purity (no artificial fillers such as lactose, cellulose or starch used). TLC (Thin-layer Chromatography) tested to guarantee product quality. Plum Flower takes great care to preserve delicate herbal oils, which are first evaporated using either a water or water-alcohol base in a process that never exceeds 100° centigrade. Sealed vacuum chargers precisely control the temperature, ensuring that none of the oils are lost. Cheaper, high-temperature methods are common industry practice, but these tend to burn off the vital oils. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Governments Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world. Varuna Fulfillment Center items are special ordered. These take an extra week to deliver.

This is a potent 5 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that one gram of extract is equal in potency to 5 grams of herb. Used as a tea or decoction. In China, where it is called Ho Shou Wu, Fo-Ti root is said to possess almost magical rejuvenating properties, and it is especially popular with the elderly who believe it can help one maintain hair color, preserve youthfulness, and restore fertility. Traditional Chinese herbalists place great emphasis on the shape and age of the roots, with the older roots being in great demand. Made into a tea or infusion for oral ingestion, Eastern and Western herbalists recommend Fo-Ti as a tonic to maintain youthful vigor, increase energy, tone the kidneys and liver, and purify the blood. It has also been employed as a remedy for insomnia, stomach upset, and diabetes. Fo-Ti contains a number of glycosides that account for the herbs use as a remedy for stomach disorders and constipation. Researchers suspect that the roots may contain compounds with mild cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects, but this has yet to be proved. Fo-Ti has been found to reduce hypertension, reduce blood cholesterol levels, and reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease among individuals prone to these conditions. In Chinese materia medica, Fo-Ti has been used historically for neurasthenia, insomnia, excessive sweating, dizziness, elevated serum cholesterol, coronary disease, weakness, pain, and backache. These uses conform well to the traditional Chinese medical research that Fo-Ti has anti-toxic, anti-swelling, and tranquilizing properties.
