COMMENTS:
This tall herb has a thick rhizone, huge, pointed leaves with downy gray undersides, and yellow summer flowers. It is named after Helen of Troy who was said to be collecting Elecampane when she was abducted. Another name it is known as is Scabwort as it was reputed to cure scab disease in sheep.

Uses: The fresh root is eaten dried or cooked. Root can be candied or made into throat losenges. It is said to kill tuberculosis bacteria: is antibacterial, antifungal, expectorant, and treats coughs. Stimulates immune system in animals and was brought with the pioneers from Europe.

Intestinal Parasites: Contains alantolactone which helps to expel intestinal parasites.

Women's Health: Studies as yet have not proven Elecampane helps stimulate uterine contractions but has long been used to bring on menustruation.

Blood Pressure: In animals tests showed it reduced blood pressure. Consult your doctor if you wish to try it.

Insomnia: Has shown to have a sedative affect in animal testing.

Dosage: For parasites and cough, gently boil 1-2 teaspoons dried powdered root in 3 cups of water for 30 minutes. Take one or 2 tablespoons with honey up to 2 cups per day.

Elecampane Flower - 2nd Grade (Inula japonica; Xuan Fu Hua) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V Elecampane Flower - 2nd Grade (Inula japonica; Xuan Fu Hua) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V

This is a potent 5 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that one gram of extract is equal in potency to 5 grams of herb. This extract is packed in Plum Flower Brand's nitrogen-flushed, safety-sealed dispenser bottle, a sample of which is pictured above. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. This is a pure herbal product with no additives. Extracted from sulfur-free and chlorine-free herbs for superior quality. Manufactured in a low-temperature water extraction process to preserve herb integrity. Extracted essential oils are replenished for proper potency. Strict quality control testing to ensure microbiological and heavy metal safety. Only powdered herb added to maintain purity (no artificial fillers such as lactose, cellulose or starch used). TLC (Thin-layer Chromatography) tested to guarantee product quality. Plum Flower takes great care to preserve delicate herbal oils, which are first evaporated using either a water or water-alcohol base in a process that never exceeds 100° centigrade. Sealed vacuum chargers precisely control the temperature, ensuring that none of the oils are lost. Cheaper, high-temperature methods are common industry practice, but these tend to burn off the vital oils. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Governments Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world. Varuna Fulfillment Center items are special ordered. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. Elecampane's volatile oil has been shown to be active against the tubercle bacillus. The volatile oil stimules the production of mucus, as the saponins stimulate the bronchial structures, thus increasing the lung's elimination of mucus. The plant's mucilages soothe the irritated throat lining. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'In herbal medicine it is chiefly used for coughs and other pulmonary complaints, being a favourite domestic remedy for bronchitis. It has been employed for many years with good results in chest affections, for which it is a valuable medicine as it is in all chronic diseases of the lungs, asthma and bronchitis. It gives relief to the respiratory difficulties and assists expectoration.' 'Its principal employment as a separate remedy is in acute catarrhal affections, and in dyspepsia attended with relaxation and debility, given in small, warm and frequently repeated doses. It is, however, seldom given alone, but most frequently preferred in combination with other medicines of a similar nature.' 'It is best given in the form of decoction, the dose being a small teaspoonful, three times a day.' 'The root used not only to be candied and eaten as a sweetmeat, but lozenges were made of it. It has been employed in whooping-cough. It is sometimes employed in the form of a confection for piles, 1 oz. of powdered root being mixed with 2 oz. of honey.' 'In the United States, it has also been highly recommended, both for external use and internal administration in diseases of the skin, an old use of the root that has maintained its reputation for efficacy.' 'Externally applied, it is somewhat rubefacient, and has been employed as an embrocation in the treatment of sciatica, facial and other neuralgia.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Elecampane is an aromatic stimulant and tonic, and is said to be expectorant, emmenagogue, diuretic, and diaphoretic. It is much used in chronic pulmonary affections, weakness of the digestive organs, hepatic torpor, atonic dyspepsia, with flatus, and internally and externally in tetter, itch, and other cutaneous diseases.' 'Inula is somewhat slow in action, and should be used for quite a time to get its full action. That it is an important remedy in irritation of the trachea and bronchiae is now well established. It is adapted to cases with free and abundant expectoration, teasing cough, and pain beneath the sternum, conditions frequent in la grippe, and the severer forms of colds.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'The direct tonic influence of inula seems to be exercised also upon the respiratory tract after protracted disease promoting recovery. It lessens excessive bronchial secretion controls the night sweats and imparts real tone and strength.' 'Hare says that inula has an actively astringent influence.
